Project name:

Double Frame Duplex

Project description:

The owner of this three-family 1980s era Clinton Hill townhouse had a simple program: extend the ground floor living space and combine it with half of the second floor to create a three bedroom duplex. The existing ground floor had only eight feet high ceilings, and the extension was limited to 6 feet in depth due to lot coverage restrictions. By increasing the ceiling height at the extension and creating a nested pair of frames, the space expands and connects to the garden. The thick black steel frames create sunshading for the south facing facade. A new stair was created connecting the two floors, with a new kitchen and bathrooms.
