Project name:

Courtyard Apartments

Project description:

This new apartment building will feature four full floor, two-bedroom units and a ground floor retail space. The layout of each of the residential floors evolved to create the sense of an open and light filled space not typical of many New York City apartment buildings. A 10’x20’ inner court separates the front and back of each apartment. Residents will be greeted with the courtyard view upon exiting the elevator, with a corridor along the window and a long counter which will serve as a flexible space for work and gathering.

The facade evolved from the negotiation of two adjacent buildings with different facade setbacks. The two angled planes merge the adjacent facades. These angled facade planes also direct views away from a city power utility station across Fifth Avenue, and towards the green space of the cemetery. The gap between the planes also creates a balcony with views directed up 5th Avenue.
