Project description:
303 Sumpter Street, currently under construction in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, transforms an existing 2-story brick townhouse into an 8 unit apartment building. We were able to maximize floor area with a vertical extension of two floors and a penthouse, as well as a horizontal extension into the existing side yard. The south-facing front wall of the existing building was preserved, but not visually pleasing. To veil the existing building and tie it in with the new addition, we developed an operable metal mesh screen system to bind both old and new building parts together. It also creates the opportunity for useful sun shading, and added performance by incorporating shallow exterior balconies. On the interior, the structural brick, concrete, and raw steel columns remain exposed, creating a modern industrial look.
